The student’s work in the 2D Portfolio should demonstrate understanding of the principles of design:
Including unity/variety, balance, emphasis, contrast, rhythm, repetition, proportion/scale, and figure/ground relationship. Successful works of art require the integration of the elements and principles of design; students must therefore be actively engaged with these concepts while thoughtfully composing their art. These works as a group should demonstrate the student’s visual organization skills. As a whole, the student’s work in this section should demonstrate exploration, inventiveness, and the expressive manipulation of form, as well as knowledge of compositional organization.

Week 4: Composition - Key Concepts Review
Just as a composer uses all the instruments in a symphony to create a stirring piece of music, you should compose each picture so that its parts work together to create a work of beauty. Each item in a picture has an effect on the whole, so don’t just point and shoot. Take a little time to compose each picture into the masterpiece it could be. Remember that you are trying to develop mastery in concept composition as well as in technique in each of the images you create.

13. Other Breadth Ideas:
- Studio Portraits: Video: Portrait session with a Twist, close-ups, full length, revealing something about the character of the person, hiding parts of the face/body
- Perspective: attempt to foreshorten your subject in an interesting way that considers negative space as much as positive space.
- Patterns: Natural vs. Man-made patterns. Varying in aperture or Depth of Field
- Reflections: in water or other reflective surfaces - mirrors, cars, windows.
- Urban Landscapes: architecture in Cairo!! Historic vs. Contemporary. Unfinished Architecture, staircases, bring a model if that inspires you! Rooftops, satellites, Views from above or down below.
- Rural Landscapes: go for a drive to Saqqara on the weekend, photograph the architecture amidst the natural environment
- Leading lines in Landscapes: look for leading lines
- Alternative Points of View - birds eye view & ant's eye view. Try multiple compositions from the same vantage point.
- Slow shutter speed - borrow a tripod. Look for S curves, look for action (cars driving by), try panning
- HDR Landscapes: try bracketing and do your own HDR landscape.
- Explore Tilt-Shift Photography. Google it!
- Fish Eye Photography
